Ranitidine alert 2019

Ranitidine tablets (which reduce acid production in the stomach) which Mr Warren sometimes prescribes have temporarily been withdrawn whilst an investigation into the link between some of the tablets contents (not the Ranitidine drug itself) and a potential carcinogenic effect are investigated. Ranitidine tablets have been around for many decades and are considered safe enough that they can be purchased ‘over the counter’ without a prescription. Until the enquiry is completed, the advice is to avoid these if possible or use alternatives, but if the patient has be ‘settled’ on these longterm then they may continue so long as they are made aware of this potential (yet unproven) link
